In this episode I am talking to social media expert, PR thought leader and marketing advisor to some of the biggest brands in the world – Katie King.

Katie is founder and Managing Director of Zoodikers consulting, who aim to help companies move from being disrupted, to the position of disruptor. She is also co-founder of an Artificial Intelligence startup called AlinFM.

Katie has advised many of the world’s leading brands and business people, including Richard Branson, o2, Orange, Accenture, Arsenal, Harrods, and Aston Martin –  as well as Universities, Police Federations and hundreds of small businesses and startups.

She delivered two TEDx talks, is a regular commentator on BBC TV and radio, and is invited regularly to speak at corporate events and international conferences around the world. Katie has an MBA from the University of Westminster, and Zoodikers is her third successful company.

In this episode Katie shares a vast amount of valuable wisdom and advice from her own perspective as an entrepreneur discussing business lessons, stories and mistakes. She also shares her marketing expertise that can be used to help us all build better brands and better businesses today.

If you could go back to any point in your life, and have 1 hour with your past self; what moment would it be and what would you tell yourself?

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, who gave it to you and how has it positively affected your career?

01:13:55 One of my first bosses said ‘Do an MBA, before you have a child’

Who is the most disruptive, rebellious or revolutionary entrepreneur of the last 2 years?

01:15:07 I struggle with this; because I actually feel that the poster boys of disruption are in fact about the companies rather than the founders. Uber & Air BnB for example, they haven’t put the founders in the spotlight in the same way Zuckerberg or Dyson are. I think this is very smart, because if I’m thinking about succession planning, then I’d rather the brand not be reliant on a face or one person.

What is the one generally agreed upon rule, or conventional piece of wisdom that you disagree with?

01:17:07 A few years ago there used to be an agreed way that you would go about running a business; about your profits and levels of investment, and gearing. But it’s now been turned on it’s head and there’s no right way of doing things any more.

If you could change one law what would it be?

01:19:45 Assisted suicide and euthanasia. I appreciate the complexity of those laws, but I do think they’re dated

What’s your definition of entrepreneurship?

01:20:42 Someone who has a vision, has an idea, and goes out and makes that happen. That doesn’t mean just in business, it could be any shape or form. It takes a vision and a desire to make money on your own rather than relying on somebody else.

What advice would you give to anyone listening to this who wants to become a creator entrepreneur?

01:22:03 Clear business plan, have clarity on what it is you want to achieve. Do some research, go out there and find out if it’s needed. Find out who’s doing it and therefore what might the barriers be to you actually making any money. Read up and get as much advice as you can. Be prepared for a really rocky ride. But do it, make it happen.
